Giotto's Magdalen

At last to surrender
to the light-denched cliffs
of Giotto's mountain. . . to angels
or to God. . .

to reach past the green waters
into the slate blue
of sky  beyond self

or wholly soaked

to enter the green water slowly, arms awash
. . . to sink into the deep rose
of the robe she accepts
at the tomb. . .

his Magdalen's hair. . . the ochre rush

small plants flare from the mountain
penetrant as stigmata

her sanctity is color
and color an easement against void:

crescent of vessel
borne in a celadon sea
